Hey guys! Decided to take a break from senior project for a little while to upload some goodies!

This was a project for my 2D Character III class. We had to choose a character ( Cleopatra, Rumplestiltskin, Genghis Khan, Sherlock Holmes, and...some other guy.), create a turn around for him/her, and describe their personality. Only me and one other girl chose to do Rumplestiltskin...which is a shame because he is awesome!

For those of you who don't know the better brush up on your Grimm fairytales.

These were the very first sketches I did for the assignment. Usually, when people think of Rumplestiltskin (or Rumpelstiltskin according to google...), people think of an old, short, goblin-type creature. I didn't like that idea, mostly because short old men creep me out. So instead, I decided to go for more of a pincushion/spider type of creature. Spiders have always scared me, so why not make a villain out of what you fear most?

Rumplestiltskin is also supposed to be another word for poltergeist, thus giving me permission to make this guy as creepy as possible. This character doesn't have any legs...instead he uses two giant needle-like canes to walk around on. His face is very mask like and plain, however, it can split and crack open like slits in paper when he smiles or talks.Unfortunately, I spent so much time trying to work out the mechanics of his face and body, that I completely forgot to develop his personality. In my mind, he was just a creeper (like Hannibal Lector or the Phantom from Phantom of the Opera)...and that's all that anyone needed to know.

Once I got to class, though, and we began our presentations...I realized that I needed to think of something fast.

This is what I came up with:

Rumpelstiltskin was originally a human being who's wife (or daughter) just happened to be the object of the King's lust. When confronting the King about his lecherous advances, Rumpel is killed in cold blood, and his body hidden within the walls (or floor) of the spinning room tower. (Something tragic happens to wife/daughter...) His ghost haunts the tower till this day seeking vengeance against the King. When the heroine of the story is locked in the spinning room many years later, Rumpel approaches her, acting as (a very scary-looking) imaginary friend. He spins the straw into gold for the girl, thus allowing her to be released from the tower and engaged to said King's son.

Rumple's wants the girl's first born child in order to seek revenge against the King. Perhaps, in exchange for the child, the Prince gives himself up instead? Perhaps Rumple possesses the Prince and has him kill himself in front of the King? Either way, something epic goes down.

It is a story about humanity...and how one loses it when seeking revenge.

I don't really remember what else I said about the story after this point. All I know is, I really creeped out my class. "Chrystin!" they said, "That's so....DARK!"

Then I just giggled and sparkling rainbow unicorns exploded in the background.

It was really messy.

  1. "Then I just giggled and sparkling rainbow unicorns exploded in the background."
    Of course it did. :D

I love it Yuki. A fresh twist on Rumple and the story, although fragmented, is awesome. :D Good to see new work. I hope things are going well and your senior project isn't stressing you out overly much. <3

  2. That mood sketch at the top is so beautiful. I hope you finish it out! I really wanna see it!

  3. I always love your character designs, creepy and awesome!!
